What the hell?

It’s seven weeks to go and I’m very stir crazy to be gone, out of Boston, to Thailand, and living with Laura. Today I turned in grades, bought crab for David Day, and finished clearing out Beck’s backyard with her and the neighbor. It was very satisfying to see the job done, to see a perfectly flat patch of mulch, without obstruction, not even the little green sproutlings from the maple overhead. There must be something about us, as humans, that desires such uniformity amongst nature. (more…)

Eight weeks to Thailand

Summer term is closing fast. Finally, the light bulbs in my creative writing class seem to be going off. Tomorrow I’ll get up really early and ride to Truro with W. I’m a little worried about my knees holding up.

The list of things I want to do while I’m still in Boston grows. And there is still Home and Garden to finish. I’m looking forward to a long ride to clear my head, and the ferry back on Sunday. Lately I’ve been doing a bit of yard work for B, my hostess. It’s been useful research/rehearsal/remembering.

One of the projects I must absolutely complete before departure is recording some of my classmates reading their work.

Summer term has begun

BU was nice enough to offer me a spot teaching EN 202 again this summer. I was thrilled to get another six weeks of college-level teaching experience, and another shot at selling me wares as a fiction teacher. There must be so many bad intro to creative writing courses out there. I feel very lucky to have had great intro instructors at Emerson. I’ve noticed that I’ve become very flexible this summer term, especially with regards to understanding student’s needs. Previously I was a real stickler for turning in work on time. I must have given three extensions in so many days.

Writing Home and Garden is going well. I’m almost done with the eighth section, only four more to go. Then revise, revise, revise. I’m starting to get nervous that I’m not in the revision stage yet.

Speaking of stages, I’m pretty sure I’m going to be riding in the Boston-Provincetown bike ride in two weeks. I did an eighty mile ride last weekend to prepare and even though I was sore for a day or two, I did well. Planning another long ride with a friend to give myself plenty of time in the saddle to think about whether I want to risk spending thirteen hours getting from Boston to P-town on my bike.

Laura leaves soon. Wah.
